Dornier Winesv2 Dornier The name Dornier can be traced back to the 13th Century in Franche-Compte, a formerly independent region in eastern France. The name Dornier describes a profession, that of a merchant of potteries. The Dornier Family can trace back its direct ancestors to the small village of Arcon in Rohne-Alpes, a few kilometers from the Swiss border.Dornier is situated on ancient deep, decomposed red and yellow granite, Tukulu (yellow) and Oakleaf (red) soils. While varying in clay content, they all have good moisture retention and keep the vine roots cool. These complex soils are vital in giving our wines their unique character, as is the range in altitude of the vineyards – from 100 and 200 metres above sea level. A multitude of aspects add to vineyard diversity and the high mountain peaks trap the cool Atlantic breezes to slow the ripening and create intense flavour compounds.

newlands_brewery The story of beer dates back to the ancient tombs of Egypt and pre-dates the wine industry in South Africa. Our story began on the banks of the Liesbeek River where Pieter Visagie first brewed beer in 1658. In the mid-1800s, Jacob Letterstedt built the original Mariendahl Brewery in Newlands. Upon his death, Anders Ohlsson was first in a succession of proud brewers to nurture the noble traditions and whose legacy is enjoyed to this day.On the playing fields of Newlands, history and the record books keep being re-written. And every sip of the way, our legendary beers have stood testimony to the fact that when you spend so much time practicing, you eventually get rather good at it.

District 6 Museum district-six-museum District Six was named the Sixth Municipal District of Cape Town in 1867. Originally established as a mixed community of freed slaves, merchants, artisans, labourers and immigrants. District Six was a vibrant centre with close links to the city and the port. By the beginning of the twentieth century, however, the process of removals and marginalisation had begun. The first to be forced out were black South Africans who were displaced from the District in 1901. As the more prosperous moved away to the suburbs, the area became a neglected ward of the city. On 11 February 1966 it was declared a white area and the life of the community was over. More than 60 000 people were forcibly removed to barren outlying areas aptly known as the Cape Flats, and their houses in District Six were flattened by bulldozers. The District Six Museum, established in December 1994, works with the memories of the District Six experience and with that of forced removals more generally.
